• Ensuring that the Chief Engineer’s instructions are carried out by the efficient organization of the Engine Room staff and will direct junior Engineers accordingly.
• Organizing the Engineering department ratings respective duties and hours of work in accordance with the Crew Agreement and conditions of service. He shall direct, in accordance with the Chief Engineer’s instructions, all maintenance work performed by engineering personnel (including maintenance contractors). He is to maintain close liaison with the Chief Officer on the day to day workings of the Deck department.
• Managing all identified risk to ship, personnel and environment and establish appropriate safeguards.
• Consulting with the officer he is relieving, upon joining, discussing the condition of the machinery, plant and equipment and after making an examination will report any defects to the Chief Engineer.
